Liam, pointing to his stuffed pteranodon: “Mommy, the bananadon is like a dragon?”

On Sunday morning, the kidlets woke up bright and outrageously early. So we sent them in to my parents’ room.

Some time later, I heard a crash downstairs. “Hmm,” I thought, being a lazy and foolish woman, “hopefully my dad’s down there with whoever just made that crash.” Then I heard strumming, and since the only strummable instrument in the house (my dulcimer) is on top of one of the kitchen cabinets, I went shooting out of bed like a shot-out thing.

Halfway down the stairs, I smelled smoke.

In the kitchen, I saw cornstarch sprinkled all over the stove, and the cardboard cornstarch box burning merrily away inside the toaster oven. Also, the fan was running on the microwave.

I remembered the strumming and its up-high source, and looked up to see Liam sitting on top of the refrigerator, eating an apple fritter and looking very pleased with himself.

(Later, I discovered that he had also taken some time out to color on my dry-erase board with marker.)

Today, I went to put on a DVD for the kids (Riverdance has become a favorite, particularly with Liam). Unfortunately, since it turns out Liam had inserted TWO DVDs earlier, I spent the next fifteen minutes trying to extract said DVDs from the slot.

Unsurprisingly, Liam has turned out to be very, very good at putting puzzles together. We’ve gotten him a couple of 24-piece Lightning McQueen ones, and he is happy to do them over and over and over throughout the day. He’s even given Ngaire’s princess puzzle a shot (but it’s 48 pieces and lenticular, so he tends to lose patience halfway through).

Incidentally, spell check thinks “lenticular” should be “testicular.”

I think you did, and I am heartened by the fact that your brother survived to adulthood.
